So, I needed a new fly box. If there’s one thing the fishing industry isn’t short of is fly boxes. Simply search the term ‘Fly boxes’ in google and hundred of opportunities come up. Plastic, Wooden, Aluminium, Clear lids, Flat foam, Slotted foam, compartments, magnetic. You name it. It’s there.
I wasn’t looking for anything too fancy, just something that would hold hundreds of flies for just a few quid. Many options where available, C&F, Wychwood, Airflo, Platinum, and some that I haven’t even heard of.
The most important thing I look for when buying a product is its reviews, price and construction. I settled on a platinum fly box from – http://www.flyandlures.com.
For 8 euro a box, I thought why not. We had some problem with delivery, the box had got lost somewhere so I contacted David at flyandlures and he generously re-sent another. Within days it was here, customer satisfaction to the max. Flyandlures 1. Here’s the description.
- PLATINUM CF TROUT/NYMPH FLY BOX
- HAS A SWING LEAF INSERT WHICH IS VERY STRONG
- MADE FROM TOUGH STRONG AND LIGHT ABS PLASTIC
- THE LIDS SEAL TOGETHER INTO A WHITE SILICONE STRIP
- IT IS 100% WATERPROOF AND FLOATS IN THE WATER
- HAS HIGH DENSITY FOAM TO HOLD FLY,S TIGHT
- 40 ROWS OF HIGH DENSITY FOAM FOR 900 FLIES
The quality was good, maybe not as great as the C&F, I found the swing leaf to be a little flimsy compared to the more solid C&F style. But, this wouldn’t make any difference to how the foam held the fly. It’s just me being picky!

The high density foam is perfect for housing all types of flies, this box holds beaded river flies, which when dropped are still safe in their foam slots. Unlike others with less dense foam, which re-leaves itself of the hook upon impact with the ground.

Some boxes claim to be waterproof, featuring a water tight seal, the platinum fly box is 100% waterproof, even when completely submerged beneath the surface. Perfect for deep wading on rivers! Being fully watertight, the fly box floats perfectly, sometimes a slip in the river or a trip on the bank may leave your beloved flies water-bound to the nearest estuary. Atleast, with a floating fly box, you have more chance of retrieving them!

The catch, swing leaf and box hinge are all still in perfect working order after around 6 months of use. Nothing has seemed to slip, wear or fall out. The foam is as dense as it ever was holding flies tight and secure.
Overall im pretty impressed with these fly boxes and will order more for some of my other fly collections. For 8 Euro per box flies can be kept dry and stored safe all year round. The only problem is.. is 900 slots enough!?
